About External Fellowships
External fellowships are those offered by private foundations, government agencies, and corporations. A variety of support is given, from one-time awards to multi-year support. Grants are available at every stage of the graduate and postdoc career and applying for grants should be a component of every individual development plan.
The External Fellowships Analysts help facilitate the external fellowships process, from pre-award application review to award closeout. When students receive external fellowships, our office will help to review the financial support package and is coordinated to ensure that all costs remain fully covered, and that all activities–including assistantships and student employment–align with University and fellowship guidelines.
Aside from the obvious financial benefit that external fellowships provide, securing external funding has additional benefits:
- Freedom to pursue your own research project
- Demonstrates commitment and initiative; exposure to valuable feedback
- Competitive external fellowships stay with you throughout your career
- Build and distinguish your CV when entering the job market
Receipt of external funding exemplifies excellence in research, writing and scholarship
