GSADC Application Process

Graduate Studies is currently accepting applications for the Graduate Student Advisor to the Dean and Chancellor 2023-24 position. Applications are due Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

The application requires the submission of a CV and two recommendations, one from your major professor. Once you've completed the form below, please refer your recommenders to the GSADC Recommendation Form.


  • GSADC Service Year 

  • The GSADC position is a 13-month appointment, starting September 1 and continuing through October 1 of the following year. This position pays a salary plus full tuition and fee remission during the position's tenure.

  • Dissertation Year Fellowship

  • The year following service as the GSADC, the student receives a dissertation year fellowship from Graduate Studies. Following the 13-month appointment, the tenure of the fellowship begins October 1 and continues for nine months into July. The dissertation year fellowship includes a monthly stipend, full tuition and fee remission, and a research and travel allowance.

  • Leadership Skills and Experience

  • During the GSADC appointment, the student will have the opportunity to work directly with the Chancellor, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, and other campus administrators and staff on issues and events related to graduate education and student life. This level of engagement will provide the student an opportunity to develop key leadership, advocacy, and organizational skills for working within higher education administration and academia. 


All registered doctoral students in good standing who are making progress towards the degree are eligible to apply. Applicants must be advanced to candidacy at UC Davis by the start date of September 1. Qualifications include:

  • A desire to serve as an advocate and liaison for graduate students
  • Knowledge of the campus and the needs of graduate students
  • Ability to plan and coordinate events and volunteers
  • Demonstrated communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work well with a variety of people
  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership and service
  • Ability to understand and represent a variety of perspectives

Responsibilities and Activities

General Responsibilities

  • Identify and act upon issues of importance to graduate students
  • Assist in graduate student outreach and retention programs, including a self-designed project implemented under supervision from the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies and the Chancellor
  • Assist graduate students one-on-one with questions, concerns, issues, and/or grievances
  • Identify ways to improve and assist in communication between graduate students, Graduate Studies (GS), and the Office of the Chancellor
  • Work with GS staff on the coordination of fall orientation programming, including specialized programming related to international students, domestic diversity, and graduate student TAs. 
  • Coordinate the Chancellor’s Leadership Development Seminar Series 
  • Organize and facilitate the Chancellor's Graduate and Professional Student Advisory Board, and serve as an active committee member on the Graduate Student Association Executive Committee (Ex-Officio), Graduate Ally Coalition, Campus Community Council, Graduate Council (including the Administrative Committee), the Campus Council on Community and Diversity, and others. 
  • Participate as an active team member of Graduate Studies.
