UC Davis Graduate Programs On the Rise in New Rankings

Graduate programs at the University of California, Davis, in the biological sciences, medicine and agricultural engineering are ranked among the top 20 in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 graduate school rankings, released today (March 20).

The list reveals new rankings for business, law, education, engineering, mathematics and physical sciences, medical and nursing programs. The annual Best Graduate Schools rankings are based on different types of data: survey results relating to academic excellence and statistical indicators that assess the achievements of a program or school’s students and faculty.

“We are thrilled to have many of our advanced degree programs recognized year after year,” said Prasant Mohapatra, vice provost of graduate education and dean of Graduate Studies. “These new honors demonstrate how our commitment to providing the best learning experience for graduate students is bolstering our culture of collaboration and excellence.”

2019 U.S. News and World Report's "Best Grad School" Rankings

  • Biological Sciences - In the Best Graduate Biological Sciences Programs category, UC Davis tied for the 18th spot overall among more than 250 public and private national universities in the 2019 rankings. It was ranked second in the specialty category for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology graduate programs.
     
  • BusinessThe Graduate School of Management made significant leaps in both the Full-Time MBA and Part-Time MBA rankings.  U.S. News’ latest ranking places the Full-Time MBA program at No. 37, up five positions from last year, and now among the top 8 percent of the 480 MBA programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB) that were surveyed.  The UC Davis Part-Time MBA program offered in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area is ranked among the nation’s best for the seventh consecutive year, moving up to nine slots to No. 32. Read more on the Graduate School of Management's website.
     
  • ChemistryUC Davis, which offers both at Ph.D. in Chemistry and a master's in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, rose three spots in the Best Graduate Chemistry Programs, tying for the 32nd spot.
     
  • Computer Science - In the Best Graduate Computer Science Programs category, UC Davis master's and doctoral programs earned the 37th spot.
     
  • Earth Sciences - UC Davis' Geology Graduate Group, part of the UC Davis Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, tied for the 24th spot in the 2019 Best Graduate Earth Sciences Programs ranking.
     
  • Education - In the 2019 Best Education School ranking, the UC Davis School of Education tied for the 37th spot. The School of Education offers Ph.D.,  Ed.D. and M.A. programs as well as credential programs.
     
  • EngineeringThe College of Engineering rose one spot from last year's ranking, tying for 34th. Additionally, UC Davis received high marks in a number of engineering specialty rankings, with Biological/Agricultural (7th) and Civil Engineering (tied at 11th) earning top 20 spots in their respective disciplines, while Electrical Engineering jumped seven spots in a single year, tying for 35th. Other ranked specialties include Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical (23rd), Biomedical/Bioengineering (21st), Computer (31st), Environmental (13th), Materials (30th) and Mechanical (35th).
     
  • Law - The UC Davis School of Law rose two spots (from 39th to 37th) in this year's Best Law Schools ranking. Law always came in at 32nd for Intellectual Property.
     
  • Mathematics - UC Davis offers master's and doctoral programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and maintained a tie at 34th in the Best Graduate Mathematics Programs ranking.
     
  • MedicineThis year's rankings place the UC Davis School of Medicine at 10th among top schools for primary care training, up from 18th in 2017, and at 39th for research, up from 45th last year.
     
  • Nursing The master’s-degree leadership program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the university also jumped six spots, placing at 46th in the nation.
     
  • Physics - The Department of Physics, which boasts both a master's and a Ph.D. program, jumped one (from 29th to 28th) spot in the Best Graduate Physics Programs list.
     
  • Statistics - Two UC Davis graduate programs made the ranking for for Best Graduate Statistics Programs, Statistics (31st) and Biostatistics (50th).
