Several UC Davis graduate programs, including those in business, education, and nursing, are ranked among best in the country, according to the newly-released U.S. News & World Report 2018 rankings of "Best Graduate Schools."

Based on a variety of quantitative measures, the U.S. News & World Report’s graduate rankings are among the most well-regarded reports on excellence in higher education. Some master's and doctoral programs are ranked annually by U.S. News, while others are assessed on varying year-to-year cycles. The new 2018 rankings are focused on business, education, engineering, law, humanities, social sciences, medicine and nursing.

"Graduate education is truly what makes UC Davis a world-class research university," said Prasant Mohapatra, vice provost of graduate education and dean of Graduate Studies. "We're proud to see a number of our programs recognized for their academic excellence and leadership."

Top showings in U.S. News and World Report's "Best Grad School" rankings

  • Business - Both the full-time and part-time Graduate School of Management MBA programs landed in the top 50 in the nation, at 42 and 41, respectively. This is the 22nd consecutive year that UC Davis Graduate School of Management’s Full-Time MBA is ranked among the premier programs in the nation. Read more here.
  • Economics - The most recent rankings have Economics program tying for the 29th spot, a gain of 3 from the 2014 rankings.
  • Education - The graduate programs housed in the UC Davis School of Education tied at 36 among education schools across the United States, rising 15 spots from last year.
  • English - The English program jumped 6 spots, from 26 in 2014 to tying for 20 in 2017.
  • Engineering - The College of Engineering tied at 34 among engineering schools nationally, and ranked in the top 10 for biological / agricultural engineering programs.
  • History - The new rankings have UC Davis tied at 32nd in the nation.
  • Medicine - This year’s rankings place the UC Davis School of Medicine at 45 for research, up from 47 in 2016, and at 18 among top schools for primary care training, up from 37.
  • Nursing - TThe master's-degree leadership nursing program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing ranked 52 in the nation.
  • Political Science - Political Science jumped from 23 (2014) to 17 in the most recent rankings.
  • Psychology - Psychology tied for the 26th spot.
  • Sociology - Sociology is yet another program that rose in the rankings, jumping from 31 (2014) to 30.

Earlier this year, U.S News and World Report’s “Best Global Universities” ranked UC Davis first in programs for plant and animal sciences, second in agricultural sciences, and fourth in environment and ecology. UC Davis also had a number of top showings in the QS rankings, in which UC Davis is among the world’s elite institutions in 35 of the 46 subjects and all five of the subject areas featured.
