Mother and Son Graduate Together at UC Davis Graduate Studies Commencement
Mother and son Kay and Kyle Holmes are excited to be graduating soon. Both are in graduate programs at the UC Davis School of Education.
Kyle is currently a teacher at Granite Bay High School and has used his work there to conduct his graduate research. He also completed his undergrad at UC Davis and began teaching two years after graduating. Kay says, "From a young age, we knew that Kyle would have a job working with kids."
Kyle wanted to be able to teach and gain additional knowledge simultaneously. The Education graduate program, in which he would be able to attain his master's and teaching credential, was a good fit for him.
Kay who has a master's in Native Studies, wanted to work with Dr. Steven Crum at UC Davis in one of the only university offered Ph.D. programs in Native Studies. Her previous work in the Native Studies program has influenced her work in the School of Education, as her dissertation pertains to how Natives are represented in education and the effects of this representation.
Kay and Kyle are excited to be graduating at the same time. "We know this doesn’t happen very often," says Kyle. "And we appreciate sharing this experience together."
What are their plans after graduation? Kay hopes to work in a university Native Studies department. Kyle will continue teaching journalism and next year plans to tackle teaching the theater program at Granite Bay High.
You can watch Kay and Kyle (and hundreds of other graduates) in person or online as they walk in the UC Davis Graduate Studies June commencement.
