External Fellowships are those offered by private foundations, government agencies, and corporations. A variety of support is offered, from one-time awards to multi-year support. Aside from the obvious financial benefit, receipt of external funding exemplifies excellence in research, writing and scholarship.
Graduate Studies, in partnership with the graduate programs, provides matching commitments to encourage students to compete successfully for external fellowships. Matching commitments refers to the use of campus funds to supplement graduate student financial support that is provided by an external sponsor. Matching commitments are usually arranged by graduate program staff, who apply for a matching commitment to Graduate Studies on the student's behalf. Students should notify their programs when they receive an external award so the faculty and staff can work with Graduate Studies to furnish the student with an appropriate level of funding. Our staff and faculty pages state the matching commitments policy in full.
