Apply for the Wakeham Mentoring Fellowship
Formerly called the MCT Wakeham Fellowship, the Wakeham Mentoring Fellowship Program was a competitive awards program for UC Davis academic mentors. Up to five $10,000 fellowships were awarded for mentors to help support one or more of the applicant's UC Davis graduate student mentees.
Wakeham Fellowship Timeline
- 2018-2019 Academic Year
UC Davis Graduate Studies will promote a variety of workshops and seminars that will be offered during the academic year. Mentors intending to apply for the 2019-2020 fellowship must attend at least three of the listed sessions or other comparable mentoring events of their choosing that took place between July 2018 and June 2019.
- May 1, 2019
A call for proposals will be announced and distributed to all eligible faculty and the online application will open.
- June 28, 2019
Proposals must be submitted by 11:59 pm on June 28.
- August 2019
The selection committee will review proposals and notify winners.
- 2019-2020 Academic Year
The winning mentors and graduate student mentees will implement their proposed plans to enhance their mentoring relationships.
UC Davis mentors meeting the following requirements are eligible to apply for this fellowship:
- Applications from individual mentors and their mentee will be considered, though joint proposals from multiple mentors in a graduate program or group are strongly encouraged.
- The mentor may hold appointments in any academic discipline. They may be tenure-track or non-tenure track, and may be members of the Academic Senate or Academic Federation. The mentor must be eligible to serve on advanced degree committees.
- Faculty intending to apply for the 2019-2020 fellowship must attend at least three of the mentoring sessions listed here or other comparable mentoring events of their choosing.
- The applicant must be acting as a mentor to at least one graduate student who is currently enrolled in a UC Davis academic graduate program and who is in good standing.
- The graduate students involved may be domestic (US citizens or permanent residents), international, AB540, or undocumented students.
- The mentor may also be mentoring undergraduate students and postdocs and involve them in the proposed project, but the main focus of the project must involve graduate students.
- Mentors who have previously received the fellowship in past years may apply, but priority will be given to mentors who have not yet received the fellowship.
Eligible mentors from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. The funds can be used for a variety of mentoring activities for the student/mentee, but cannot be used for catering, mentor conference registration, or to compensate guest speakers. Proposals should focus on new (not incremental or ongoing) graduate student mentoring activities and will be reviewed and evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Significance & Objectives
- - Does the proposed project define and address an important issue in graduate education and mentoring relationships?
- Does the proposed project clearly state its goals and objectives?
- Is evidence provided that the project will advance the stated goals and have a positive effect on enhancing mentoring relationships?
- Mentor & Mentees
- - Is there evidence that the mentor can provide the leadership and mentoring needed to implement this proposal and provide sufficient experience/training for the graduate student(s) involved?
- Are both the mentor’s role in implementing the project and the benefits to the mentee(s) clearly defined?
- - Is there evidence that the program is based on a sound rationale?
- Does the project include consideration of contemporary concepts in graduate education and mentoring relationships?
- Are the fellowship funds allocated for student use?
- Does the project positively impact the participation of students from groups who are underrepresented in their academic discipline?
- Is the plan for evaluation sound and likely to provide meaningful information on the effectiveness of the program?
- What are the broader impacts of this project?

Outline and Formatting Guidelines
The proposal should include a cover letter (co-signed by the faculty and participating graduate students), and the proposal (as outlined below), which is limited to 2500 words. Please use the specific labels of the outline as provided below.
- - Provide a summary of the proposed project in one paragraph. There are example abstracts for reference at the bottom of this pace.
- Provide a summary of mentoring experience over the past three years.
- List the mentoring seminars that the mentor attended for the 2018-2019 academic year.
- Describe any other professional development activities that the mentor has participated in the past, which relate to this proposed project.
- Proposed Project
- Describe the problem(s), question(s), or issue(s) in the project, and how the project will address them.
- Describe the graduate students who are participating in the project, and their academic development. Describe how they will participate in this project.
- Indicate the anticipated benefit of the grant to the mentor, and to the graduate student mentees.
- Describe how the mentor will assess their progress in improving mentoring relationships. Describe how the mentor will receive feedback, while protecting the graduate students with confidentiality and potential negative repercussions.
- Impact & Outcomes
- Please describe how the project will impact graduate program(s), learning objectives for proposed activities, and/or expected outcomes for the project
- Fellowship Distribution
- For each participating student, list their name and the amount of funding they will receive.
