Grad Slam Presentation Title
Barriers to Using Certified Medical Interpreters in the Hospital Setting: The Hispanic Bilingual Nurse Experience

Describe your presentation style in three words.
Storytelling, connector, interactive

What did you do to prepare for Grad Slam?
I used prior feedback from Dr. Moret, reviewed previous contestants' presentations, practiced out-loud alone, and in front of my husband.

What initially attracted you to your field of study?
I have personal experience being a Hispanic bilingual Nurse translating at the bedside and wanted to explore others' experiences. In addition, I would like to contribute to fixing the current issues that exist with barriers to proper communication with Limited English Proficiency patients.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I really enjoy spending time with my family, and my puppy Nacho. I also enjoy exercising and am looking forward to having more time to do that!

If you could invite one person (from any point in history) to sit in the audience and view your presentation at the March 13 Final Round, who would it be and why?
If I could have my late paternal grandfather watch my presentation it would be awesome to show him what an impact he had on me as a child. I recall sitting at the table, speaking English with my brother and cousin, and him yelling "Hablen Español!" He instilled the importance of keeping fluent in Spanish and I am forever thankful for that.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself utilizing my RN license as an educator or other leadership role where I can continue making a positive impact in people's lives.

Are you #TeamMisara?

Cheer on Misara and the other nine finalists at the UC Davis Grad Slam Final Round on March 13.

About Grad Slam

UC Grad Slam is an annual contest in which master’s and Ph.D. students across UC campuses – in disciplines ranging from hard sciences to humanities – compete to sum up their research for a general audience. Students should present the significance and fundamental points of their work at UC Davis in a clear, direct, and interesting manner.

Presentations should be no longer than three minutes in length and prepared for a diverse audience comprised of students, faculty, and community members. Judges will strongly consider clarity and effectiveness of the presentation by a general university audience.
