Resources for Graduate Students Expand at UC Davis

Graduate Studies at UC Davis is pleased to announce new services and resources for graduate students, faculty and staff members via their new Graduate Student Life unit.

Graduate Student Life offers an environment in which students can receive informal and confidential counseling and advising on issues such as student/faculty conflicts, academic concerns, personal issues, funding/program concerns and a student's rights and responsibilities arising from their experience on campus. An in-office psychologist is part of the team and is devoted specifically to graduate student needs.

Additional Graduate Student Life services include professional growth opportunities, which are offered through the new GradPathways professional development program and includes classes, workshops, and one-on-one student appointments. GradPathways, for example, assists students in acquiring writing and presentation skills, entrepreneurship and leadership skills, acquiring careers outside academia, job search skills and clubs and seminars in teaching and career assessment.

The Graduate Student Life unit also has a commitment to diversity and believes that advanced research, scholarship, and teaching are strongest when informed by the diversity of viewpoints, backgrounds and experiences of its students. "A diverse graduate student population enhances the academic experience of all students and provides organizational support and resources to empower students through our workshops, social events and student organizations," says Hector Cuevas, Director of Graduate Student Life, Professional Development and Diversity.

The Graduate Student Life unit's goal is to assist in the success and retention of UC Davis’ graduate students by providing services and resources that enable students to more effectively enjoy and benefit from their campus experience. The new unit also answers a need identified within the report from the UC Davis Joint Administration/Academic Senate Task Force on Graduate Education.
