New McNair Scholars Program Director is True Student Advocate

Siria S. Martinez, a University of California, Davis alumna, returned to the campus this fall as the new UC Davis McNair Scholars Program Director. And now she wants to give back to the university that gave to her.

The McNair Scholars program at UC Davis currently serves 47 undergraduate students, aiding them in the research process and preparing them for graduate school. Martinez is excited to take part in this endeavor. To students thinking about applying to the program, she says, "Students should prepare themselves for a program that is academically rigorous and challenging, but know they are provided resources and support throughout their participation." She also encourages students to use her knowledge and experience as another resource, as well as urging them to seek out mentors that will help them grow.

Martinez has a true interest in advocating for students, especially those from underrepresented groups on the UC Davis campus. She wants them to take advantage of research opportunities here and pursue even higher education after graduation. "Don't be afraid to dream big," she advises.

What is her personal philosophy? "My philosophy illuminates from the belief that every student is entitled to a nonthreatening environment in which they can feel free to express their thoughts, ideas, fears, and aspirations of success in higher education," Martinez says. As the new director of the McNair Scholars program, she plans to make sure this vision is made into a reality for her students.
