McNair Scholars Program Looking for a Few Good Underrepresented Undergrads

The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 academic year. The program, commonly known as the McNair Scholars Program, is dedicated to providing research-related experiences and academic support to talented undergraduates. The program serves first-generation college students from low-income families and students from populations underrepresented in graduate education.

Applications are available to all eligible full-time undergraduate students at UC Davis. Eligibility requirements include having a GPA of 3.00 or better, 90 quarter units (60 semester units) complete at time of entry and at least two years remaining before graduation. Students that plan to apply must identify as a low-income and first-generation college student OR a member of a group underrepresented in graduate study (Chicano/Latino, African American/Black, Native American). They must also be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with an intention to pursue a Ph.D. after graduation. (This program is not open to students pursuing professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, management or law.)

All majors are welcome to apply and students who have transferred from a community college are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are available on the McNair website. Students can also e-mail, fax or call the McNair office to have an application mailed to them.

Students who participate in the McNair Scholars Program receive benefits such as academic, career, and personal counseling, mentoring by faculty, preparation for the GRE, assistance in applying to graduate school, paid travel to professional and research conferences, training in research methodology, and a summer research internship with a research stipend of up to $2,800.

If faculty and staff wish to nominate a student to become a McNair Scholar, they should e-mail Director Siria Martinez at ssmartinez@ucdavis.edu and include the student's name and student ID number, if possible, to determine student's eligibility.

Applications are due to the McNair office on June 30.
