Graduate Student Health Insurance
Built for students, with students actively involved in its design, the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) provides high-quality, affordable and convenient coverage that protects students from unexpected health care costs. UC SHIP offers medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, mental health and substance use disorder benefits for UC undergraduate and graduate students and their eligible dependents.
Spouse and Dependent Coverage
If you’re enrolled in UC SHIP and are married and/or have children, you can enroll those eligible dependents in the same medical, pharmacy, dental, and vision coverage you have for yourself. For information about who you can enroll in UC SHIP, visit the UC SHIP Eligibility and Enrollment webpage. You must re-enroll your dependents every term.
Waiving UC SHIP Coverage
Because all UC students are required to have medical insurance, UC automatically enrolls all registered students — including domestic and international students, and students in absentia — in UC SHIP medical, pharmacy, dental and vision coverage. You will find the cost of coverage (premium) on your registration bill. You can waive UC SHIP coverage if you already have a health plan that meets the university’s health coverage requirements. Visit the UC SHIP Waiver Information page to learn how to waive enrollment in UC SHIP before the waiver deadline for your campus. You must re-apply to waive coverage each academic year.
Student Health and Counseling Services
UC Davis Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) provides UC Davis students with confidential counseling services, wellness, illness and injury care. Services are available to all registered students, regardless of insurance.
SHCS provides the following services
- Acute / Crisis Care
- Primary Care
- Counseling
- Psychiatry
- Pharmacy
- Optical Services
Student Health and Counseling Services also provides other services, including intervention services, lab and x-ray services, and physical therapy.
All registered UC Davis students are eligible for services available through Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) at student rates. No payment is required at the time of service or purchase. All students have accounts maintained by UC Davis Student Accounting. Charges incurred at student health are billed directly to a student’s UC Davis billing account towards the end of each month. Student account balances can be viewed using MyBill.
Disability Accommodations
Graduate students requiring accommodation are encouraged to work with the Student Disability Center (SDC). The Student Disability Center promotes an inclusive environment for UC Davis students with disabilities, equipping students with appropriate accommodations and services to achieve their individual academic goals. The SDCU is staffed by a team of professionals who have expertise in the education of students with disabilities.
Health 34
Health 34 is a team of healthcare educators and providers who will deliver free, non-emergency support and service navigation for mental health and basic medical care to every segment of the UC Davis campus.
