Difficult conversations can yield the best teaching moments. Students (and instructors) are often compelled by charged, controversial or contentious issues, and addressing these issues creates valuable opportunities to practice complex critical thinking and communication skills. But these outcomes depend on instructors having the skills to create supportive environments where students feel safe taking risks and thinking in new ways. This workshop focuses on the skills to create such environments, as well as to facilitate any discussion in a way that encourages students’ thoughtful engagement, critical thinking and effective communication.
