Graduate Diversity Network

Graduate Diversity Network (GDN)

The vision of the Graduate Diversity Network is to strengthen graduate education through diversity at UC Davis.  Our mission is to facilitate communication and collaboration between people and offices in our diversity efforts all across our university, as we strive to increase the recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups among graduate and professional students, and postdocs at UC Davis.

This network will connect people, provide resources, offer provocative questions, share best practices, offer research and evidence-based approaches at increasing diversity, promote cross-campus collaborations, and inspire others to join in our work to promote a diverse and inclusive community at UC Davis.

All members of the academic community are invited to join and participate in this network: administrators, faculty, staff, graduate students, professional students, postdoctoral scholars, and undergrad students.

Strength Based Leadership Training

Motivated student leaders from on-campus student groups met to engage in a new leadership training that focused on understanding and assessing their strengths to lead. Using the Gallup's "Strengths Based Leadership" book written by Tom Rath and Barry Conchie, students learned the four areas of strengths they tested into using the StrengthsFinder assessment test. The discussions stemming from several passages in Rath's "Strength Based Leadership" allowed student leaders to parallel their own experiences in leading to those much more experienced.

The four areas of strength for each individual was put into action through activities helping development of their own student groups. From developing mission statements to planning out signature events, students were able to discover the need for each of the areas they individually contributed to their leadership team.

The leadership training series occurred in the months of January to March. The following organizations were in attendance (links below):

  • Asian American Graduate Students - AAGS
  • Black Graduate and Professional Student Association - BGPSA
  • Chemistry Underrepresented Minority Committee
  • Ecology Diversity Committee
  • Equity in Science Technology Engineering Math and Entrepreneurship - ESTEME
  • Latino/a Graduate Student Association - LGSA
  • Postdoctoral Scholar Association - PSA

Graduate Diversity Network - Kickoff Event!

The Graduate Diversity Network kickoff occurred on Monday, December 1st with an amazing support from many attendants. David Acosta delivered a powerful message as keynote speaker on "Preparing the Next Generation of the Graduate Workforce: Using Holistic Review to Achieve Diversity, Innovation and Excellence". Further, we welcomed Jeffery Gibeling (Vice Provost of Graduate Education and Dean of Graduate Studies) and Ralph J. Hexter (Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor) with an opportunity to give some opening remarks welcoming everyone who attended. After the remarks, a resource fair and mixer ensued to allow for students, staff, and faculty to interact informally over on-campus resources for those interested in promoting and encouraging diversity. The event was well attended with over 100 attendees that included administrators, faculty, staff, graduate students, professional students, postdoctoral scholars, and undergrad students.

Time: Monday, December 1, 2014 at 3-5 PM
Location: Student Community Center, Multipurpose Room (2nd floor)
Contact: Steve Lee (stnlee@ucdavis.edu) Graduate Diversity Officer for the STEM Disciplines
