Line-Up Instructions

Master's Students and their program's Master Program Deputy (MPD)

You must be in full academic dress and arrive at the tents on Hutchison Field (outside, south of the ARC Pavilion) by 2 p.m. on June 14, 2018.  The Masters line-up will generally be arranged in alphabetical order by graduate program name. You will receive an email from gradcommencement@ucdavis.edu that specifies your line position assignment.  You will be assigned to one of four lines (A, B, C, or D) and a position number between 1 and 230 (for example D-200). Please know your position assignment so that you can find your place in the assembly area. For each graduating student and each MPD, you will find your individual Announcer Card with your name and program information on a pole located in the assembly area. You must keep your card with you to present on-stage. Please be on time, as the procession will begin promptly at 2:45 p.m.. There will be volunteer hosts to answer any questions and assist with the proper arrangement of your cap, gown, and hood. If carrying a cell phone, please place on vibrate or silent.

Graduates and Presenting faculty ONLY in the line-up area
Please say your farewells to guests before arriving at the line-up area.  Your guests will want to proceed directly to the Pavilion through the Southeast or Southwest Concourse level in order to choose a good seat when the pavilion opens at 2 p.m.

Personal Items
Please do not bring any personal items to the line-up area (purses, backpacks, cameras, etc.) -- leave items with your family members. (Graduate Studies is not responsible for lost or stolen items.)

Stage Direction
When it is time, the dean will call the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) candidates and then the Master's students to come forward by program. A host in a blue robe will direct each row as to when to approach the stage. The M.F.A. graduates will lead the procession to the stage using the stairs on the right (east). When your turn comes, present your announcer card to the reader, who will announce your name. You will then cross the stage and receive the university scroll and pin from the presiding officer, exit the stage, get your photograph taken, and return to your seat.

Doctoral Students and their Presenting Faculty

You must arrive at the tents on Hutchison Field (outside, south of the ARC Pavilion) wearing your cap and gown – and carrying your hood – by 2 p.m. on June 14, 2018. The Doctoral line-up will generally be arranged in alphabetical order by faculty last name. You will receive an email from gradcommencement@ucdavis.edu that specifies your line position assignment.  You will be assigned to one of four lines (A, B, C, or D) and a position number between 1 and 230 (for example A-200). Please know your position assignment so that you can find your place in the assembly area. For each graduating Doctoral student, you will find your individual Announcer Card with your name and program information on a pole located in the assembly area. You must keep your card with you to present to the on-stage announcer. Doctoral faculty presenters do not carry Announcer Cards, but doctoral presenters do carry the hoods of their graduating students. Please be on time, as the procession will begin promptly at 2:45 p.m.. There will be a General Information table outside the tent. There will be volunteer to answer any questions and assist with the proper arrangement of your cap and gown. If carrying a cell phone, please place on vibrate or silent only.

Your faculty presenter will march in front of you carrying your hood. Each faculty presenter will then precede his/her student(s) onto the stage, using the stage stairs on the right (east). You will present your announcer card to the reader who will announce your name, the faculty presenter's name, and your degree. Your faculty presenter will then present the hood and stand beside the dean while you are invested with the hood. You stand in front of the hooding officer (the dean) and face the audience while he places the hood over your shoulders.

After the investiture is completed, turn and shake hands with the dean. You will then cross the stage and receive the university scroll and pin from the presiding officer, exit the stage, get your photograph taken, and return to your seat.

Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership Candidates
Graduates from this program will be presented by a single professor.

Interested and Retiring Faculty

Faculty members who have notified Commencement Central that they will be participating in the ceremony as an interested or retiring faculty member will arrive in full academic dress and arrive at the west tent on Hutchison Field (outside the ARC Pavilion) by 2 p.m. on June 14, 2018.

Stage Party

Invited Stage Party members need to be in full academic dress and will enter the ARC Pavilion via the Northeast Arena entrance (lower stairs) and assemble in the Special Events Room at 2 p.m. on June 14, 2018.
