Mentoring at Critical Transitions: Setting the Course with Hugh Kearns

This year's third MCT program event featured guest speaker Hugh Kearns, BAgSc, MEd, MMHS, an internationally recognized public speaker, educator, and researcher.

The luncheon seminar brought in close to 40 faculty and staff members. Throughout the seminar, attendees were asked to form groups for quick brainstorming sessions about effective approaches and strategies for nourishing the mentor-mentee relationship.

Diversity Dialogues on Graduate Education

Sponsored by the offices of the Chancellor, Provost, and Graduate Studies, the Diversity Dialogues on Graduate Education is a series of discussions designed to better understand and work on solving the needs of underrepresented graduate students. The dialogues have drawn around 200 attendees total, with key administrators in attendance at each dialogue. So far this year, there have been three Diversity Dialogues, each with a different focus.

Graduate Student and Postdoc Professional and Career Development Professionals Meeting

UC Davis Grad Studies Hosts Meeting for Career Development Professionals

Last month Graduate Studies hosted a day-long meeting at the conference center for professionals who provide career and professional development services to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. The event drew 34 career development professionals from a broad range of universities, including members from almost all other University of California campuses, Stanford University, Scripps Research Institute, Claremont Graduate University, and the University of Utah.

Donald G. Crosby Fellowship in Environmental Chemistry Namesake Honored

On May 23, 2013, Crosby took that opportunity to meet and talk with recent recipients over lunch at the Walter A. Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. Fellows in attendance were Theodore “Ted” Hullar (Atmospheric Science), Katheryn Kolesar (Civil and Environmental Engineering), Sarah Hafner (Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry) and Emily Parry (Civil and Environmental Engineering). Ted Hullar is the son of Theodore Hullar. His father was UC Davis Chancellor from 1987-1994.

Epidemiology Graduate Student Honored in Canada

Congratulations to Epidemiology graduate group doctoral student Thomas Stopka, who was a finalist for the Reuel A. Stallones Student Prize, a nationally recognized epidemiology award.

Last June Stopka was honored at the 2011 North American Congress of Epidemiology, held in Montreal, Canada. He was presented with an Honorable Mention for his paper, "Demographic, Risk and Spatial Factors Associated with Over-The-Counter Syringe Purchase among Injection Drug Users."

Ecology Grad Students Become Newest Switzer Fellows

The Switzer Fellowship Program supports highly talented graduate students working towards environmental improvement and who demonstrate the potential for leadership in their fields. This year two of the 20 new 2011 Fellows are from UC Davis and join the Switzer Network of nearly 500 Fellows. Newest Switzer Fellows, Mark Elbroch and Tavis Forrester, are doctoral candidates in the Ecology graduate group.
