For Karin Albornoz — a Ph.D. student studying Horticulture and Agronomy who works in a UC Davis lab on molecular biology of tomato postharvest chilling injury — that means getting out into the world to work directly with small-scale farmers.

Five marketing, communication and development projects from UC Davis have earned international honors from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE.

The five Circle of Excellence awards — the most earned by any University of California institution — follow 38 awards UC Davis earned in regional CASE competition earlier this year.

The projects awarded Circle of Excellence awards were produced by staff from the offices of Strategic Communications, Graduate Studies, and Development and Alumni Relations.

UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May has selected Prasant Mohapatra to serve as vice chancellor for research. Mohapatra, who has been the dean of graduate studies and vice provost of graduate education since 2016, will oversee an annual research funding portfolio of about $783 million (as of fiscal year 2016), and lead the university’s corporate research relations and translation of UC Davis research into knowledge and technology of significant public benefit.   

From May 4-8 2018, graduate students selected for the Research and Innovation Fellowship for Agriculture program (RIFA) attended the third annual RIFA Conference and Project Planning Short Course in Point Reyes, California in preparation for their upcoming international projects in agriculture, food systems, and development. 

The University of California, Davis, has been recognized in the Times Higher Education World Reputation rankings for 2018 released Wednesday, ranking 47th among the 100 top ranked universities by reputation.

Students from seven disciplines — art, design, art history, music, theatre, creative writing and French — will be part of the annual Arts and Humanities Graduate Exhibition at UC Davis.

With a total of $17,500 in prize money, UC Davis postdoctoral scholar Denise Bronner had the highest winnings of the night for Anu Snacks of Sacramento, which makes all-natural snacks from the spent grain of microbreweries.

Author and business futurist Robert B. Tucker, ’78, will return to UC Davis as the keynote speaker for the 2018 Graduate Studies Commencement at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, at the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) Pavilion.

Sarah Messbauer is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology, studying the impacts of public arts policy on refugee communities in Canada. Messbauer recently completed her tenure as the 2016-2017 graduate student assistant to the dean and chancellor, where she engaged in programming and advocacy efforts aimed at improving the student experience for more than 8,000 graduate and professional students at UC Davis.

Mirroring a reality at universities across the U.S. and around the world, only a small percentage of doctoral candidates and postdoctoral scholars conclude their studies at UC Davis and pursue a tenure-track faculty career at a university. A new program, Leaders for the Future, helps prepare students for success outside of academia.
